re. Doctors withdraw services from local sex assault centre & Scarborough MPPs defend $22,000 pay hike Scarborough MPPs may think they work hard and deserve a massive pay raise. Perhaps they do. But what makes them think they are the only ones in that position? According to an article by Dennis Raphael published on January 3 in the Toronto Star, even after the 3% pay increase they gave minimum wage earners, a person working a 40 hour week is still far below the poverty line. In fact, you would need to work more than 60 hours a week to just hit that line. And people on various forms of social assistance, including ODSP, are often even worse off. But even minimum wage earners are doing better than the Scarborough Hospital's sexual assault doctors who are now supposed to work for free. Just why are we paying a health care premium again? Wasn't it to ensure that we would have the care we need when we need it? These Liberal and Conservative MPPs may have an inflated sense of self worth but we have a chance this October to correct it.
