Linda Leatherdale is correct to question our skyrocketing insurance premiums. And it's not just auto insurance either. Insurance for your home or business is also rising. As one of her interviewees suggested, Bob Rae probably should have implemented public auto insurance when he was in office.

I recall those days quite well however. There was a firestorm of protest from the private sector. Paradoxically, the insurance industry found itself arguing that Ontario's public service could do the job so much better that it would cost 5,000 jobs. Given that the world was in the worst recession since the great depression, it seemed liked a bad time to add to the unemployment lines.

By the time the Tories took over in Queen's Park, the world economy was recovering. With two successive majorities, they have had no excuse not to implement public auto insurance.

When the NDP form the next government and once again try to bring in public auto insurance, it's good to know that this time the Toronto Sun will be on our side!
