Jaspreet K. Flora is a welcome antidote to the young
people who have written complaining about how our political system
doesn't excite them. She didn't wait for some politician to explain the
issue to her or get her excited about it. She recognized the importance
of the issue, did the research and acted on it.
Democracy relies on people like Jaspreet. It needs
people who are willing to work for what they believe in and who are
willing to stand up to defend the rights of others. Democracy demands a
lot from the citizens, but the alternatives are not appealing.
As Edmund Burke observed, "All that is necessary for
evil to triumph, is that good men do nothing." If Jaspreet doesn't pick
up the cynicism that affects so many as we grow older, then we can
retain our hope for a better future.
